Organisers' Comments

Having extended the area to the North for the badge event last year, the club and Hedley were keen to start from the south in Burnham Beeches to give everyone the opportunity to run there and for the short courses to create an entirely different event.

We were consequently challenged to find a new car park, and after scouring maps and a morning cycling around we were lucky enough to find the excellent surroundings of Leys Farm. This enabled the walk through to start at Burnham from where Hedley was able to set his suitably challenging and enjoyable courses.

Finding the field took time however, which combined with delays in getting permission for Egypt really meant that we were planning and organising in less than 2 months. Many thanks therefore to all concerned in Happy Herts, John Thompson our controller and the competing club captains for turning everything around so quickly. We hope you think the result was the good quality event the Compass Sport Cup merits.

Many thanks also to all the Happy Herts members who worked very hard on the day, particularly those that did not have time or the warmth to compete.

We would also like to publicly thank the Corporation of London for permission to use Burnham Beeches, the Portman Burtley Estate for permission to use Egypt and John Carter for allowing us to use the field on Leys Farm. All were very helpful and without them the event could not have happened.

Handling the Compass Sport Competition offered some challenges. In particular the whole entries and start allocation process seemed complicated and certainly worth a review for next year. Kevin Parkes and his SI team did however successfully use the Compass Sport software and the scrolling results of club positions generated considerable interest.

Lastly can we thank Neil's parents for looking after our children on the day, and our children for visiting Burnham in the rain several times on the way back from events south of London.

We have found two compasses - please contact organisers ( jngostick@ntlworld.com ) - We will have them at Westerham

Planner's Comments

All of the major events in this area in recent years have started and finished in the north, so many shorter courses have remained in Egypt Woods in the north. Burnham Beeches in the south has more green, but also areas of greater complexity than Egypt as well as some very runnable areas. I was anxious that, for this event, courses should spend all or most of their time in Burnham Beeches to give a different experience to as many runners as possible. Thank you to Neil Gostick for negotiating the use of a parking field that made this possible.

My thanks are also due to John Thompson for controlling the event in such a calm and supportive way.

Controller's Comments

On behalf of all competitors I congratulate Hedley on his challenging courses, getting the very best out of these beautiful woods. Congratulations to Slow on winning the Cup competition and to SOS in the Trophy.

We were 'accused' of confusing some competitors at the final control. The penultimate control on the White course was 103, Path Junction, 45 metres from the common final control 101, Thicket but also on the same path. Some runners punched 103 and ran to the finish past 101. Control 103 was there to ensure those on the White course successfully completed their course and not to confuse any other finishers. Although technically they have miss-punched, I have reinstated all those who made this error as I feel that the sport of orienteering is to run as fast as possible and navigate accurately which these competitors had done over the technical part of the course and they do not deserve to be penalised for their carelessness when they gained no advantage in those final few yards.

Thanks to Colin Swallow SN for interrupting his run to inform us that a control flag had gone missing. Well done Jenny and Neil for their hard work over the past months and to Happy Herts for their team work on the day.

String Course

We hope you all enjoyed the string course. We were able to lay out an interesting course through the bushes and ups and downs on the way to the main start which quite a few came back to do again. It was going to be longer but had to be remapped and planned on Saturday night due to the new fence! Many thanks to the Quinton family for setting up and running the event on the day.
