Organiser's Comments

I hope everyone enjoyed their day. I was pleased with the turn out, exactly on the break even point, so thanks to everyone for coming. Thanks to all the Happy Herts helpers. Your efficiency on the day made me redundant, as it should be. Special thanks to Roger Moulding and Eric Brown. Roger arranged the land access and Scout Hut and then hanged and collected controls on the day. Eric also hanged and collected but found time to man the finish in between. Lastly thanks to the person who found the lost dibber and placed it on my car at campus west. It found its way to its owner!

The Scout Hut made an excellent event centre. Somewhere warm to copy maps and discuss routes is invaluable on a cold December day. I hoped that the Scout Hut, Tea and Cakes would make for a sociable event and this was the case. Clive's courses looked excellent and it was only a shame that due to illness I could not try one. This was my first experience at organising a colour coded and despite some nerves in the week before the event, it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Planner's Comments

Firstly, I would like to thank everyone who came and sampled my courses. It is you that makes the whole exercise worthwhile.

I would also like to thank Hedley Calderbank for controlling; all the control hangers marshals and collectors, for ensuring the gear in the forest got out to the right places, stayed there and them came back again respectively; and of course Jacob Sharpe.

Worries of a destructive visit by an eco-fundamentalist sort of vandal-with-a-social-conscience (what other sort do you expect, in a Garden City? OK I live in one too!) who has been known before to dismantle control assemblies and then redistribute them into the nearest and thickest available rhododendron bush, thankfully did not materialise on the day - maybe he can't take the cold?

My aim for the easier courses was to set them at the right level of difficulty, and ensure that there was a steady progression of challenge available from White right through to Orange/Red and above. I hope that - in retrospect - you all feel you chose the course which was right for the level of challenge you were seeking, and were not tempted into biting off more than maybe you could readily chew: orienteering course lengths do look rather short if you are new to the sport and maybe have a running or country/hillwalking background. Do not be deluded into thinking that because a course is advertised as, say, only 3 or 4 km means you will necessarily complete it quickly and easily. Orienteering really is the ultimate outdoor workout - you test your brain just as much as your legs!

On the harder courses, given that no potential control site is too far from a path, my aim was to tempt you off the path network and to keep you thinking by setting legs with multi route choice options wherever I could. From the comments received from finishers, (for which I am very grateful, feedback is vital) most of you seemed to have enjoyed your outing.

I was especially pleased to see the high number of relative newcomers to the sport: indeed at times in the Scout Hut it seemed that they were in the majority. It is very refreshing to see the "old faces" outnumbered for once. I hope that those of you who started orienteering recently through our Saturday Series events enjoyed the different sort of challenge that a Sunday colour coded event offers, with its graded difficulty courses which make it really easy for you to improve your skills and fitness at your own pace. And of course e-punching comes as standard too, which means you can see how you did on every leg compared to your friends (that is, if they can stand your bragging or, alternatively, you can handle the embarrassment).

Best wishes to all for a Merry Xmas and for many happy orienteering days in 2003.
