Welwyn Garden City Street Score Event Results 29/04/01Comments from the Organiser / PlannerMany thanks to all those who came and risked getting very wet. I'm glad you were lucky enough to catch the brief spell of fine weather. Whether you ran or walked, I hope you enjoyed the challenge of the complex maze of roads and alleys that make up WGC. A few apologies. Control 344 was plotted against the wrong gap in the houses. I hope that by using the lamp post numbers as control numbers, most people lost very little time finding the correct location. More subtle, and much more irritating, the number for control 308 was written over what might have been a possible route into the control from the west. Unfortunately it wasn't and this would have been more obvious if the number had been elsewhere. I should also have warned about venturing into Shire Park industrial estate. Although it is shown with a solid fence line all around it, it looks to be a very inviting clear area to run across. This all shows the benefit of having an independent and non local controller for normal O events. It is very difficult spotting these things on your own, especially when you know the area too well. I set up lots of controls to try to avoid the event being a simple circular tour and to offer maximum route choice for your runs. This seemed to work, since only controls 207 and 246 were not visited. Most people were tempted to visit some 3 point controls, even those only running the 30 minute event. However, I guess most people looked at distances rather than the contours since controls 302 and 304 were most frequently visited. It was surprising to see how many errors had been made writing in the colour code. More haste, less speed, I suppose. Congratulations to Clive Street who won the 60 minute event on almost all counts, including getting back on time. A creditable second place for Jon Marsden who visited the same number of controls as Clive, but lost out principally on time penalties. Master of strategy was Rory Percival, who achieved a scoring rate of 2.5 points per control for the 10 he visited. Congratulations to leading lady, Máire Convery who gained 36 points on 15 controls, coming in a very impressive 6th overall. Mick Smith returned to HH territory to win the 30 minute event, visiting 9 controls in his run. Tony Miley came in second, with a canny run visiting only 5 controls, but a scoring rate of 2.4 points per control, equal to Clive.
