Phasels Wood Local Event Results 13/10/01Saturday Series - Special Programme for New Orienteers. Organiser/Planner/Controller's comments.I had expected a relatively large entry for this event, since there are normally a lot of scouts camping on site. Unfortunately, it was not a busy camping weekend and the only scouts that came arrived from elsewhere in a minibus. It was a shame since the weather was so good. Phasels Wood offers a good range of orienteering terrain from fast, but tricky, woodland to easy open land ideal for beginners. In planning the event I tried to give everyone a challenge, whilst still allowing beginners the chance to gain satisfaction, rather than frustration. Hence the score event had lots of controls to ensure that everyone found something easily. The fixed route Green course used some of the more difficult legs to test the old hands. Congratulations to Paul Langston for breaking the 30 minute barrier on the Score course. It took me 2 hours to tag all the controls, so I thought it would be possible. Congratulations also to M14s, Nick Metivier and Matt Gardner for a very creditable 42:20 on the green course. Being Planner, Controller and Organiser combined, makes you understand why Orienteering events normally have at least one person for each job! I hope the blunders that crept out past my controller role didn't spoil your enjoyment of this excellent venue. My blunder risk rating was made worse by the time available for getting the event together. Unfortunately, just when I should have been getting into top gear, my work took me abroad unexpectedly. This was compounded by being told when I got there, to stay another week because the deadline had been put back. This resulted in two lost weekends and a mad last minute rush to get back on track. Somehow, the preparations got done without staying up all Friday night and the event went ahead, roughly as intended. I hope you enjoyed it. Many thanks to Kevin, camp warden for permission to use the site and helpers on the day, Gerry Elliott, Colin Webster, George and Pru Normand, Pauline Goddard and once again, Eric and Lesley Brown. Thanks also to Clive Street for the documents I cribbed to save me having to write them from scratch.
