Organiser's Comments
We were incredibly lucky with the weather both on the day and when my small band of determined helpers built the arena the day before. My heart goes out to all those other event organisers who, through no fault of their own, have lost there events to the weather in the last few weeks.
Burnham Beeches is a splendid area for orienteering and Alan and Kevin invested huge amounts of time into planning the courses for you - I heard nothing but praise for their output. The most eloquent came from a Belgian M60 Interland Runner who said "tell the planner his course was beautiful". To all of you who took the time to say thank you to the volunteer helpers at the end of your run, your comments were much appreciated.
There were, unfortunately a few organisational hiccups, which may have detracted from the enjoyment of a few individuals and to those affected in any way I offer my sincere apologies.
To our neighbouring Clubs, CHIG and LOK, I offer my thanks for providing large numbers of volunteers - we will repay this debt in full. Moreover, other individuals who helped me came from clubs as diverse as RAFO, MORAVIAN, BOK, TVOC, BAOC and SO - thank you all! The usual suspects from HH were out helping in force and were simply brilliant. I won't embarrass anyone by singling them out for their especial efforts but you know who you were - thank you.
Our aim was to put on the first Level 1 Event of the new event structure and we aimed to try and create something that was like a BOC minus a little bit rather than a regional event plus a bit - I hope we succeeded and would be interested to hear your views.
To put on the event was very expensive and the main cost drivers were land access charges(the primary reason for the high entry fee), BOF/SEOA Levy, map litho-printing, toilets, prize fund, trak-mats to strengthen the field entrance and electronic equipment hire. In the budget estimate I was expecting about 800 people and we ended up with over 1200 entries albeit 400 of these entered in the last 36 hours before closing date and the final 100 on the day. Full accounts are still to be produced.
If I was to do only one thing differently next time it would be to have significantly discounted entry fees for early entry (perhaps a help to large families?), a standard entry fee for the middle period followed by a punitive entry fee for those of us who leave entry to the last minute or even beyond - and I say us because I am just as bad as the rest of you. To future event organisers my covenant is to be much better organised with regard to entries in the future!
The following lost property was collected after the event:
3 x thumb compasses
1 x SI dibber
1 x camera
1x blue waterproof top
1 x black waterproof bottoms
1 x car key
I will take all the lost property to BOC and leave it with enquiries until after my run. I am pretty sure I already know who owns the car key, one thumb compass and the camera. If you are not going to BOC then please give me a ring on 07808 932139 to make alternative arrangements to be reunited with your property or you can e-mail me at .
Thank you for coming to our event and I hope you enjoyed it.

Controller's Comments
Apart from the usual checking of control sites and a few suggestions for map changes, I had very little to do in controlling the courses. Alan and Kevin worked through several iterations of the courses, in particular trying to get the maximum length for M21E without compromising the quality. The final solution using the butterfly loops was the best option, but even then the course was "only" 15 km. The heavy snow in the run up to the event then flattened the bracken and improved running speeds, reducing winning times.
I heard nothing but praise for the courses. A number of competitors commented that there had been no path options for the whole of their course.
Mike and his team did a tremendous job in arranging the logistics of the event, including building a couple of bridges, one of which took 6 people to get into the forest.
It was a pleasure working with such a competent and enthusiastic team.

String Course Results & Comments
Well we hope everyone enjoyed the Barnaby Bear themed string course. We tried to do something different as it was a National Event and somehow in discussions with Jenny, Gemma and Ben it was decided that we would have a Barnaby Bear theme. Barnaby is a geogrpahic bear who goes exploring on CBeebies and is used in schools to provide a theme to lessons. He even made himself a map of Dublin in the episode I watched, so he seemed appropriate. His photos of orienteering, may even make it onto the Barnaby Bear website.
We had to make the course a short walk from the car park, because, as you will have spotted the main courses went directly through the wood nearer the car park. Hopefully that wont have put people off though I suspect it might. The attraction of Wilfs may have offset walking through the wood to the course. I would be interested to know, as next time we could negotiate earlier for a string bit of wood next to the car park. jngostick@ntlworld.com
I thought it was a nice course, up and down through holes and paths through the bracken and not head high undergrowth (when you are 2), again any feedback is welcome.
The winner of 'Barnaby Bear' was Freddy Walker from OD.
Best Wishes to our entrants
Yours
Neil and Jenny Gostick
