Organisers' Comments : Helen and Simon Errington

There's really not a great deal to say, other than to thank the many people who helped to put on the event :

  • the Landowners; Portman Burtley Estate - in particular Andrew Allan, National Trust, Corporation of London - in particular Martin Hartup;
  • National Event Organisers Neil and Jenny Gostick who did much work last year that we could re-use, and sorted out land access for this event;
  • Susan Marsden (Entries Secretary), and the whole Marsden family for a very useful SI training course they put on for the club in January;
  • Roger Moulding (Equipment Officer), and all the HH team leaders and helpers on the day, who all gave up their time willingly and freely. We used over 60 helpers, which allowed everyone who wanted a run to get one;
  • Helen's mum who had the boys for 11 hours on the day and for other times, and Paul Errington for hard labour with the roadway;
  • Paul Fox for transporting the tent, and for the training course in how to put it up;
  • Duncan and Roger for coming up with courses that were very well received.

We had the usual panics about the field entrance but on the day it was fine and cold and everything went as planned.

Lost property: We have two non matching green socks, one gaiter, one pair of black wool gloves and two compasses. Please contact us to arrange collection if you think you lost them - Helen and Simon Errington, 01727 842883.

Planner's Comments : Duncan Archer

When I saw that HH was going to stage an event on Egypt and Burnham, I thought, if I am going to plan an event, then I couldn't pick a better area to do it on. It has some of the most runnable woodland in the region, it has some tricky contour detail in parts, and it also has good scope for long route choice legs. I tried to get a bit of everything into the courses. Judging by the comments I received, most of you seemed to enjoy your runs - and it makes all the hard work that goes into an event like this worthwhile to see so many satisfied runners at the end of the day.

Apologies for the SI units that failed on the day. We re-instated people as fast as we could on the day, and I hope no-one was unduly affected. Software and hardware updates are about to be applied to all of our control units (just in time for them to be used at the JK) and this will hopefully reduce the number of problems to a lower level.

Many thanks to everyone in HH who helped out with the control hanging and collecting, and special thanks to Roger as controller for his useful comments during the planning.

Controller's Comments : Roger Thetford ( TVOC and JOK )

Some events have a ring of confidence and competence right from the start. The map is good, the control sites are taped in the right places (with tape that's visible!), the organisers do the right things without any fuss, and the planner produces a good set of courses, first time and to schedule. This was one of those events. All told, I did just enough to justify my existence: vetoed one dead control unit, two small sections of courses, three dubious control sites and four overprinted maps. Oh, and repositioned one taped route.

We heard many complimentary comments about the courses. Thank you: such positive feedback really is valued, and makes all the planning effort worthwhile. Thanks also to my daughter Hannah, who test-ran the yellow course one viciously cold December day, when truly 'earth stood hard as iron'. We hope that the competitors on courses 10, 11 and 12 appreciated the chance to follow some solid line features that weren't paths, for a change. Finally, well done to all in Happy Herts for staging a successful event.
