HH League Season 7 - September 2009 to May 2010

The Club League is a ranking system calculated from HH members' performance in local 'O' events between September 2009 and May 2010. It is intended to be FUN not deadly serious.

Each club member is assigned a handicap (by me). It is based on performance in preceding seasons and is adjusted to include climb as well as distance (100m of climb is treated as an additional 1km to a course). The adjusted "minutes per km" figure then represents your par speed for any course. Those who do well in one season will see their handicaps reduced  in the next season. Newcomers to the league will be given handicap speeds based on their first two results.

Points are earned thus: running at par or handicap speed should score 100 points. Running at half handicap speed (i.e. taking twice as long as expected) scores zero points. Running at twice your par speed scores 150 points. The formula to calculate points for intermediate performances uses the ratio between actual and handicap speed: the formula has been handed down by previous generations of Club Captains and is not perfect. Nonetheless its outputs generally correspond with "gut feel".

The sums are independent of age and course and try to show you how well you compare with "what you are capable of". Points accumulate with the season's events. Once you have competed in 6 events the worst results are discarded. Results will be published on the website, usually after each event or two if I'm not away. They do not really show "who is the best orienteer" but indicate "who is most improved".

The events which I will use for calculations are listed below. The outgoing and incoming Club Captains have agreed their parts of the list.. For this year's league the handicap calculations have been altered slightly to put more weight (50% not 33%) on performance in the immediately preceding season. We hope this will go some way to evening out some of the disproportionately high handicaps.
