Rules

Prizes will be awarded for individual and intra-HH area competitions. Rules for participating in the League and calculating scores remain the same as in Season 1.

Who can take part?

HH Club members, competing as HHs at nominated events

Which events?

Events will be nominated in advance and will include HH Saturday Series Events with Light Green standard courses, all South East League Events and a mixture of local District, Regional and National Events. Approximately two events per month will be nominated.

What courses?

Any course which is light green standard or above.

How does the scoring work?

All club members will be given a target time, or handicap, which has been calculated using performances over the past year. At a particular event if you match your handicap you will score 100 points, if you are faster you will score more, slower less. See the example below. A maximum of two-thirds of the total events in any season will count towards the League Total.

How do you calculate your performance at a particular event?

This is a min/km time adjusted to take into account the height climb (10m climb is considered an additional 100m distance). Multiply the course height gain by 10 and add it to the course distance to get the adjusted distance and divide that into the time you have taken. This is your performance. So for instance if your course was 6.6 km with 320m climb and you completed it in 77.57 minutes, your performance at this event was 7.92 (77.57/(6.6+3.2)).

How does your performance convert into points?

If your performance and handicap at a particular event are the same you get 100 points and for each 1% more than the target you lose 1 point and vice versa. So going back to the example, if your handicap is 7.5 and your performance at a particular event is 7.97, then you are 6.3% worse than your handicap (7.97-7.5/0.075) and would score 93.7 points.

How were the handicaps calculated?

Handicaps have now been recalculated :

  • All performances in Season 1 were used to calculate a median performance for the season.
  • Season 2 handicap was then calculated as 1/3 of Season 1 handicap + 2/3 Median Season 1 performance.
  • Everyone who had at least one run during season 1 has been included in the handicap calculation.
  • Anyone who has not had any runs in Season 1 has not had a handicap calculated. Handicaps based on Season 1 and one event in Season 2 will be calculated after one run from any of these individuals in a Season 2 counting event.
  • As with Season 1, handicaps for new competitors will be calculated after 2 runs or based on results provided to the Club Captain ( )

Questions:

Do you have to take part?

No, you can opt out of the league by simply letting me know.

I don't have a handicap - how can I get one?

  • If you are new to orienteering, after you have taken part in two nominated events your handicap will be calculated and you can score points for the remaining events in that season.
  • If you have been competing, but not at the events used in the handicap calculation send details to me of upto 5 events, course length, climb and time taken and you handicap will be calculated.

Will my handicap stay the same?

For this season, unless an error has been made (let Máire Convery know if you think this is the case) your handicap will remain unchanged. At the end of the season, however, all handicaps will be recalculated based on performances this season and the new handicap used in the following season .
